Album review – Electric City Magazine.
“The blues guitar work of Peterborough/Toronto singer-songwriter Jake Dudas is silky smooth and effortlessly groovy, emotive and evocative – at times playful and effervescent, at times dark and sinister, but always convincing and rich. But Jake Dudas’ mind is unsettled, full of concerns about modern society: how technology alienates us from ourselves and each other, how an abundance of choices paralyses us. On Choices, these two sides of Jake Dudas come to a head, with occasionally mixed results. He’s described the album as being “about bringing some darker hues to light,” and indeed, the lyrics do confront some of the darker topics on his mind. But these complex and conflicted thoughts stand in odd contrast to the flowing and pleasing guitar work. The pairing of modern tech talk and smooth blues is sometimes jarring – but, when talking about the need for a return to basics, perhaps that’s the point.”
