There’s a huge difference between pushing music out, and drawing people in.
When you push music out, things are slightly off centre. Things may sound right, but there’s no power or dynamics. And the intention is different, almost as if the music is being forced on an audience.
It’s no different than any relationship in life. Each side gives something. And you share something unique in the middle. In the musical relationship, if the performance is too pushed, it’s not as engaging, and the audience doesn’t have to do much work. The audience has to give a little–even if it’s something as simple as heightened focus.
Had a fabulous weekend up at Irwin Inn. Worked intensely at these performance dynamics. Lowering volumes. Keeping the instruments and voice very present. Giving the audience the option to engage or not, but not without a little effort on their part. A little quieting of the voice and mind.
It was a fabulous weekend. Many thanks to Patti & Dennis Irwin, the staff, and numerous patrons I had the chance to chat with.
