Recording notes.
New recorded work is slow in my world 😀
Like most small businesses, I spend each day wearing multiple hats, making sure each part of the ship is floating. Finding the time to focus exclusively on creative work is elusive. That said, I’ve tried to ratchet up finished-work as more of a priority.
I’ve been performing Lines of you since mid 2019, and have had the recording as a work-in-progress since. It’s part of a larger album that is finally coming together.
I spend a lot of time around romance—performing at weddings and other special events. This chord progression seeped in somewhere along the way, and evolved into the recorded version you hear above.
I wish I could say I was more of an intentional songwriter. I do a lot of improvising at live shows, and this is where most of my music gets developed. This song is tuned in open-G, so I was likely noodling my way towards Harvest Moon, Wild Horses or Bobcaygeon when this happened. I love this tuning—it adds unique nuances to regular chords, both harmonious and slightly dissonant.
Personally, there’s a lot of Kawartha/Muskoka cottage-country-romance in this sound. I was doing a lot of shows in those regions that summer. Wherever I perform this, I can see the views from the Burleigh Falls Inn, Windermere House and the JW Marriott Muskoka.
When writing lyrics, I’m about as non-intentional as I am with music. I always have a stable of riffs on the go, then some words arrive, usually late at night, and I’ll find a suitable match. There are snippets from everything in here—bringing me back to different moments: Wedding couples crossing the threshold. Idiosyncrasies in different personalities. Different venues. Different vistas. And that overall zone of hypnotic romance that you lock into and never want to leave (hence the extended solos).
Many thanks to some phenomenal talents involved in this song: James McKenty for the mastering, and Aaron Robitaille for the cover art.
To be released on all major music platforms shortly.
Enjoy.
