Spotlight: Three Birds live-in-studio recording.

Back in March I recorded a live-in-studio version of Three Birds by Bob Marley.

For any of you that follow my work, you’ll know that this is not an obvious choice. It certainly is not in my instinctive wheelhouse, chock full of open tunings and unresolved chords.

I added a number of Bob Marley songs to the live set years ago. The idea was to offset my abundance of mid-tempo grooves. Songs were first learned in an instrumental capacity for weddings and private events. I found the reggae rhythm to be incredibly challenging, and the new groove a welcome addition to the repertoire.

Three Birds is a deceptively simple song. With reggae, there’s so much space, and if you don’t get the groove right, it falls apart. I thoroughly enjoy playing this song live. It’s extremely challenging as a vocalist to match my lower register to the lighter, upbeat nature of the song. I worked a great deal recording this particular version. It’s impossible to hit this song the same way every time. I like the way the music in this particular take dances around the melody. I went for some more ambitious licks in the solo, and it barely makes it at times.

To my ears, it’s part of the charm. 🙂

Public show – Wednesday Jan. 16 @ The Social Pub.

I’m looking forward to performing at The Social Pub (Peterborough, ON) on Wednesday January 16, 2019. I’ve been wanting to play here for a while. It’s an exciting place with a great sound system and youthful energy. Material will follow suit, with a mix of original tracks and creative cover songs.
