New year’s eve wedding @ The Berkeley Church (Toronto, ON).

There’s nothing like ringing in the new year with great people and great sounds.

As I’ve mentioned in the past, I have a certain affinity for the Berkeley Church. Few venues combine vintage charm and grandeur with contemporary overtones. And the sound on the upper mezzanine is nothing short of spectacular. I suspect the staff at Berkeley Events are starting to question my early load-in times and extensively long sound-checks. It is truly a pleasure to hear a guitar in that space.

New year’s eve was no exception, and made all the more special by the efforts Amber and Erik put into their wedding. Most notable were the beautiful flower arrangements and large count-down clock suspended above the stage.

They put the same level of creativity and care into their music selections. With Erik being a professional guitarist, having just the right sound was high on their priority list. Major cues included a beautiful choice from Justin Nozuka (“Love”), and for the signing, a very creative version of City and Colour’s “Northern Wind,” as arranged by Erik.

It was truly an honour to be a part of their day.

In other performance notes, January saw a wedding at One King West (Toronto, ON). This was my first time performing here. It was an beautiful space and the staff were exceptional. Many thanks to Patrick at Blue Hummingbird Events for his great work with the coordination, and Angela at One King West.

This Friday, I’m looking forward to performing at another new venue: Oliver and Bonacini’s Luma (Toronto, ON). Having worked with Oliver and Bonacini Events many times in the past, I am certain that everything will be timed to perfection.

New original recordings – Storms (EP).

The past year has seen some huge steps. The first was the building of a proper working recording facility on-site; and second, the resulting creativity and burst in production.

May 2016 saw the release of four instrumental cover songs for weddings and private events. This quickly transitioned into recording work for a number of different singer/songwriter clients. Finally, though, December opened up some time for me to work on my own material.

I just finished rough mixes for a new four song EP of original singer/songwriter material. Working very much in a John Mayer-ish frame, I’m employing a large, sparse rhythmic format. Big acoustic guitars, percussion instruments, major bass, with dramatic brush strokes of electric guitar.

Musically, the material is a cross between John Mayer, Neil Young and the Tea Party.

It has been an exciting project to work on, and I look forward to sharing the results with you soon.
